Strip Word Manuscript Formatting Before eBook Production Import
Importing a Word manuscript into Vellum, Sigil, or Scrivener with its original paragraph styles intact produces a cascade of style conflicts — the production tool fights the imported styles instead of applying its own cleanly. The standard fix is to strip the DOCX first. Deliteful does that in one pass, preserving every word while removing all paragraph and inline formatting.
eBook producers and self-publishing authors working in dedicated layout tools — Vellum on Mac, Sigil for EPUB editing, Scrivener for structural organization — consistently report that DOCX import quality degrades sharply when the source file carries heavy Word formatting. Vellum in particular applies its own paragraph styles on import; when the source DOCX has conflicting style definitions, the result is inconsistent chapter formatting that requires manual correction scene by scene. Stripping the manuscript to a clean Normal baseline before import is a documented best practice in the self-publishing community.
Deliteful removes all paragraph-level styles and inline formatting — including bold, italics, and underline — from the uploaded DOCX while preserving the full manuscript text. Note that intentional italics (book titles, foreign phrases, emphasis) will be removed and need to be reapplied in the production tool. For authors whose manuscripts are already italic-light, or who prefer to apply formatting natively in Vellum or Sigil, this is the fastest path to a clean import. Images embedded in the manuscript are not affected.

Frequently asked questions
- Will this remove my chapter heading styles?
- Yes. Heading styles are reset to Normal. Your chapter heading text is preserved, but you will reapply heading formatting inside your production tool after import.
- Does it remove italics used for book titles and emphasis?
- Yes. All inline italic formatting is removed. You will need to reapply intentional italics in your eBook production tool after import. For manuscripts where this is significant, note your italic locations before running the tool.
- Is this the same as using Word's Clear All Formatting command?
- Similar in outcome. Word's Clear Formatting resets selected text; Deliteful applies the reset to the entire document in one server-side pass without requiring you to select anything manually.
- Does it work on manuscripts written in older Word versions saved as DOCX?
- Yes, as long as the file is in .docx format. If your manuscript is in the older .doc format, save it as .docx in Word first.
