Number Dissertation and Manuscript Pages Before Journal Submission
Many journal submission systems and graduate school formatting guidelines require page numbers to appear at a specific position and follow a specific start value — often with front matter numbered separately from the body. Deliteful gives researchers direct control over placement and start number for any PDF, without needing LaTeX access or the original source file.
A common submission scenario: a researcher exports a dissertation or manuscript to PDF and discovers the pagination from the word processor did not carry through, or the required format specifies bottom-center numbers starting at the introduction rather than the title page. Reformatting the source document and re-exporting consumes time better spent on revisions. For papers compiled from multiple co-author sections, the source may not even be available in a single editable file.
Deliteful applies page numbers to the exported PDF directly. Choose top or bottom, set the starting value to match your style guide's requirement (common in dissertations where body text starts at page 1 after unnumbered front matter), and optionally add a prefix. Processing costs 1 credit and completes in seconds. The original PDF is unchanged; the numbered copy is what you submit.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I start numbering at a specific page for dissertations with separate front matter?
- Yes. Set the 'Start numbering at' value to whatever your graduate school requires for the body — commonly 1. Note that Deliteful numbers all pages in the uploaded file sequentially from your start value; if you need front matter and body numbered differently, process each section as a separate PDF.
- My journal requires page numbers at the bottom center — does Deliteful support that?
- Yes. Numbers are always horizontally centered and you choose top or bottom. Bottom-center is the default and the most common journal requirement.
- Will the page numbers survive conversion back to Word or affect PDF/A compliance?
- Page numbers are rendered as a permanent text overlay in the PDF. They will be visible in any viewer and survive printing. PDF/A compliance after modification depends on the original file's properties and is not guaranteed.
- Can I add Roman numeral page numbers for front matter?
- No. Deliteful supports Arabic numeral page numbers only. For Roman numeral front matter, number the front matter and body sections as separate PDFs (with their respective numbering), then merge the two numbered PDFs into one final file.
