Extract Text from Scanned Patient Records and Clinical PDFs
Scanned patient intake forms, referral letters, and legacy medical records arrive as image PDFs that can't be searched or indexed. Deliteful's PDF OCR → Text tool extracts the raw text from those scans so records can be reviewed, searched, or migrated into your systems.
Medical records processing teams regularly deal with paper charts converted to scanned PDFs — patient histories, physician notes, insurance correspondence, and lab reports from external providers. These files are unusable for search or data entry until the text is extracted. OCR is the essential first step before any indexing, migration, or review workflow can begin.
Deliteful processes scanned PDFs server-side, extracting readable text from image-based pages and outputting one .txt file per document. OCR accuracy is highest on clean, typed documents scanned at 300 DPI or higher. Handwritten physician notes or very faint forms will produce lower accuracy, which is a known limitation of OCR technology across all platforms.

Frequently asked questions
- Can OCR handle scanned handwritten physician notes?
- Handwritten text is a known challenge for OCR. Printed and typed clinical text from clean scans produces reliable output, but handwritten notes may yield incomplete or inaccurate text that requires manual review.
- Does Deliteful store uploaded patient record PDFs?
- No. Files are processed using temporary storage and are deleted after your session. Deliteful does not retain uploaded documents.
- What resolution do scanned medical records need for accurate OCR?
- 300 DPI or higher is the standard benchmark for reliable OCR on typed documents. Lower resolution scans will produce degraded text accuracy.
- Can I batch process a full patient chart archive?
- Yes. Upload up to 50 PDFs per batch with a 2 GB total batch ceiling. Run multiple batches for larger archives.
