Sort Excel Ledger and Transaction Data by Column

Accountants regularly receive unsorted transaction exports from accounting systems — general ledger dumps, bank feeds, AP aging reports — that need ordering before reconciliation or audit review can begin. Deliteful sorts your Excel rows by any column instantly, returning a clean workbook without touching your original file.

GL exports from QuickBooks, Sage, or NetSuite rarely arrive sorted the way you need them. Sorting by date for a period close, by account code for a trial balance tie-out, or by amount descending for an audit sample all require the same tedious manual step repeated across multiple files. When you are closing a month-end with dozens of reconciliation workbooks, that overhead is not trivial.

Deliteful handles multi-sheet workbooks in a single pass — each worksheet containing your target column gets sorted independently. Sheets without that column are skipped silently. Numeric amounts sort correctly as numbers rather than as text strings, which eliminates the silent mis-sort problem common when transaction data exports with inconsistent cell types. The header row is always preserved, so your reconciliation templates remain intact.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload your Excel export

Upload the .xlsx or .xls file from your accounting system or reconciliation template.

  2. 2

    Enter the column name

Type the exact header — 'Date', 'Amount', 'Account Code', or whichever field drives your sort need.

  3. 3

    Set sort direction

Choose ascending for chronological or alphabetical order, descending for largest-first amount reviews.

  4. 4

    Download the sorted workbook

Retrieve your sorted file and drop it directly into your reconciliation or audit workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Will sorting fix the text-vs-number problem in exported transaction amounts?
Deliteful sorts numeric cells numerically and text cells alphabetically. If your export stores amounts as text, they will sort alphabetically rather than by value. Convert the column to numbers in Excel before uploading to ensure correct numeric ordering.
Can I sort multiple reconciliation files at once?
Yes. You can upload multiple Excel files in one session and each is processed independently with the same column and direction settings applied to all.
Does the tool preserve my reconciliation formulas?
No — cell formulas and formatting are not preserved after sorting. Sort a values-only copy of your workbook if you need formulas to remain functional.
What happens to sheets in my workbook that do not have the sort column?
Those sheets are left completely unchanged. Only sheets containing the specified column header are sorted.
